National Water Council
The 24th Regular Meeting of the National Council on Water Resources was held at the International Culture and Events Centre, (The Dome), Akure, Ondo State from 14th to 17th August, 2017. The Meeting was declared open by the Executive Governor of Ondo State, His Excellency Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN) and chaired by the Honourable Minister of Water Resources, Engr. Suleiman Adamu, FNSE, who is also the Chairman of the Council.
2. The Council was attended by 893 participants comprising Honourable Commissioners and Permanent Secretaries responsible for Water Resources from the 36 States of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, Managing Directors and Executive Directors of the twelve (12) River Basin Development Authorities (RBDAs), Directors of the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, Heads of the Ministry’s Parastatals, Representatives of the Federal Ministries of Health, Education, Power, Agriculture and Environment, Chief Executives of State Water Agencies, International Transboundary Water Agencies, (the Niger Basin Authority (NBA); the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC), Representatives of some Development Partners; USAID, members of the Academia, Non-Governmental Organizations, Civil Society Organizations, gentlemen of the Press and the general Public.
3. The Theme of the 24th Regular Council Meeting is ”Revitalizing Urban Water Supply and Sanitation in Nigeria”. The Theme was carefully chosen to highlight the declining urban water supply and sanitation performance in the country with a view to reversing and ameliorating the trend. A position paper presented on the theme highlighted the major challenges in the urban water supply and sanitation service delivery as;- lack of political will on the part of the Governments, population explosion and other issues that cut across institutional arrangement, human resources and other technical matters.
4. The Council Meeting was preceded by a two-day meeting of the National Technical Committee on Water Resources in which ten (10) nos Action Memoranda and Forty Four (44) Information Memoranda were generated and presented to Council. The Council thereafter considered all the presented action memoranda and approved all, while Forty Four (44) nos Information Memoranda were noted.
