NIGERIA JOINS MEMBERS OF UNITED NATIONS AND INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY TO CELEBRATE WORLD WATER DAY 2019

The Honourable Minister of Water Resources, Engr. Suleiman H. Adamu FNSE, delivering the 2019 World Water Day Speech at Sabon Piko ,Shere Ward Bwari District FCT Abuja

The Honourable Minister of Water Resources, Engr. Suleiman H. Adamu FNSE said in his World Water Day Address that 22nd March is designated by the United Nations as World Water Day, aimed at creating awareness on the significance of freshwater and to promote sustainability for freshwater Resources Management. Elaborating on this year’s theme”Leaving no one behind ” the Minister said that the theme is apt and borne out of the fact that billions around the world still lack access to safe water supply and that there’s an urgent need to improve the situation. He also revealed that in a bid to” Leave no one behind ” Federal Government has embarked on Programmes and projects to provide accelerated access to safe drinking in rural areas. In this vain, the Federal Government through its Water Intervention Programmes provides thousands of Borehole water supply scheme across the nation in rural communities especially in the North-East and Internally Displayed Persons Camp (IDPs).
The Honourable Minister informed the gathering that the Ministry went back to the drawing board after the celebration of the 2018 World Water Day and drew up a strategy towards attaining SDG 6. Rather than the usual practice of organising symposia and sensitization walks to mark the World Water Day, the Ministry collaborated with with Stakeholders, Development Partners, Non-Government Organisations, Corporate Bodies, and Public spirited individuals to provide Three Rural Communities with Borehole water supply schemes . He listed the beneficiaries of these arrangement for the celebration of the 2019 World Water Day as follow :
I) Sabon Piko Community in Bwari Area Council, FCT
II) Chika Lugbe Community along Airport Road, FCT; III) Aso Community in Maraba, Nasarawa, State.
While commissioning the Solar Powered Borehole Water Supply Scheme at Sabon Piko, the Honourable Minister charged the Community to own the facility and protect it against vandalism. He ended his Speech by saying that the importance of Water in National Development can be summarised in the statement that emanated from the UN Budapest Water Summit of 11th October 2013: “A sustainable World is a Water-Secured World”. Consequently a Sustainable Nation is a Water-Secured Nation.
Earlier the Permanent Secretary FMWR, Mrs. Ekaro Comfort Chukumuebobo presented the Welcome Address, followed by goodwill messages from Representatives of different Organisations as well as the Community Head of Sabon Piko Shere.
The Celebration ended with Vote of thanks by Engr. Gerald Osuagwu, Director Water Resources Planning and Technical Support Services.
