WATER MINISTER COMMENDS JIGAWA STATE FOR BEING NUMBER ONE IN PROVISION OF ACCESS TO BASIC WATER SUPPLY IN NORTH WEST; SECOND IN OPEN DEFECATION FREE (ODF) STATUS.

The Hon. Minister of Water Resources, Engr. Suleiman H. Adamu FNSE, FAEng has stated that Jigawa State is number one in the provision of access to Basic Water Supply in the North West and second State in Nigeria where four (4) Local Government Areas (LGAs) have been declared Open Defecation Free (ODF).

 Engr. Adamu made this disclosure on Tuesday 8th October, 2019 in Dutse, Jigawa State when he paid an advocacy visit to Governor Mohammed Badaru Abubakar to brief him of the approval granted by Federal Executive Council (FEC) to kick- off the campaign on “Clean Nigeria: Use the Toilet” and to campaign for the country to stop open defecation.

Jigawa State, the Minister noted is among the few states that have signed onto the Partnership for Expanded Water, and Sanitation and Hygiene (PEWASH) protocols which he initiated in 2016. Households with access to Basic Water Supply in Jigawa State is: 86.6%. Sanitation Marketing activities in the State has led to the construction of 2,400 units of improved toilets within the Sanitation, Hygiene and Water in Nigeria (SHAWN) LGAs being implemented through the support and collaboration of UNICEF.

Engr. Adamu urged that the process of ODF can be scaled up to other LGAs by the State Government to achieve a state – wide ODF Status for the state in a very near future.

Engr. Adamu commended the State Governor and his Team whilst noting that Sanitation relates to public health especially clean drinking water and adequate disposal of sewage as distinct from a dirty environment.

In his response, the Governor of Jigawa State, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar promised that his state will work harder to add additional Local Government Areas in ODF and super cede Cross River State before the National Launch of the campaign by President Muhammadu Buhari on 19th November, 2019.

The Governor during his own address promptly declared a state of emergency on Water and Sanitation (WASH) and directed the Attorney – General of Jigawa State to commence the process towards the passage of a bill to ban open defecation in the State.

Governor Badaru informed that with the 86.6% statistics on access to water supply, his administration is investing heavily in the sector, and working towards achieving 100% status.

The Governor who was very enthusiastic on working to achieve the said status appreciated the Minister for his dedication in ensuring that Nigeria is ODF by 2025.
