In its determination to strengthen partnership with State Governments in the implementation of large – scale water infrastructure projects, in accordance with the Water Resources Roadmap 2016 – 2030, the Federal Ministry of Water Resources on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria yesterday in Abuja virtually signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Kaduna State Government for the design and construction of Itisi Multipurpose Dam Project for Water Supply, Irrigation and Hydropower.
In his address, the Minister stated that the Ministry developed strategies to ensure that proactive steps are taken towards smooth and successful implementation of the revised project components and scope.
Engr. Adamu reiterated that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari is committed to supporting all initiatives towards providing critical infrastructure for socio- economic well – being of Nigerians. “The MoU…is also another milestone in the efforts of the of the Federal Ministry of Water Resources to strengthen partnership with the State Governments…” he said.
He stated that Federal Government shall be responsible for all costs related to the engagement of the Consultant who shall be responsible for the design, construction, supervision and administration of the project execution and submitting timely report to all parties under Phase 1 of the project.
The Minister went down the memory lane to recall that the initial concept of the project as designed in 2008 was purely a Hydropower Generation Dam Project, noting that the priority of the project was however changed to provide Water Supply to Kaduna Metropolis and environs along with an Irrigation Infrastructure of about 35,000 hectares, in addition to generation of about 40MW hydropower.
The Governor of Kaduna State, His Excellency Mallam Nasir El- Rufai on behalf of Kaduna State Government appreciated the effort of the Federal Government towards the execution of the Dam project and promised that Kaduna State Government will cooperate and ensure the successful completion of the project by sourcing for funds to meet her own component of the agreement. Governor El- Rufai equally extolled the dedication to service delivery of Honourable Minister of Water Resources and his team.
The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was witnessed by the Permanent Secretary of Water Resources, Mrs. Ekaro Comfort. C and Director, Department of Dams and Reservoir Operations FMWR Engr. Danjuma Madaki.
